Interview with Revivogen's Dr. Khadavi By Regrowth Staff June 17, 2003 Regrowth recently interviewed Dr. Alex Khadavi, MD, MD, CEO of Revivogen's Maker Advanced Skin & Hair.

Mr. Regrowth: Dr. Khadavi, please tell me your history.

Dr. Khadavi: I started studying at UCLA, majoring in biology, where I got my degree.And I got my doctorate from George Washington School of Medicine.
I went on to complete my specialist training at the University of California, San Francisco, where I was the head dermatologist and received the "The Society of Investigational Dermatology Award," which is given for outstanding research findings.

My field of research includes the human gene decoding project, transplantation of tissues, gene therapy, and development of new technologies for skin cancer and hereditary hair loss treatment.

Currently, I continue my private research in the L.A. area, and I am a professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California and CEO of Advanced Skin & Hair, Inc.

Regrowth: What first made you interested in hair loss and its treatments?

Dr. Khadavi: I became worried about my own hair loss when I was 20 years old when I started losing it.
The only treatment for hair loss at that time was the prescription rogain (minoxidil). Because I was a medical student at UCLA at that time, I became very interested in hair loss, that is, its cause and treatment, and I became very interested in male hormone hair loss in particular.
My moment of enlightenment was when I found out that DHT was the most central hormone driving a series of step-by-step reactions that caused hair loss.
Until this time I was in graduate school at the medical school where I became familiar with pharmacy, where one drug, propecia or prosca specifically caught my attention.
Then Profesia was not yet available, and only Profeska was used to treat prostatic hyperplasia.

☞ Because the cause of prostate hypertrophy is the male hormone DHT, drugs with the same ingredients are released differently as treatments for prostate and hair loss.
In the stomach, prosca is a prostate treatment, and propecia is a hair loss treatment. Regrowth: So did you use prosca, too?

Dr. Khadavi: I was very interested in prosca, but I was somehow nervous about eating with my mouth. Can't those fears make me a product that applies prosca effectively? It made me curious. I've discussed it with a couple of biochemists and pharmacologists at UCLA and found that the product you apply needs a delivery system, and it's actually possible to create that delivery system. With their help, I made a simple treatment with reagents and tested it on myself and 9 other friends. The test results were a great success.Not only did many of the subjects stop hair loss, but some even had their hair regrowth.
Our success was interesting to me for two reasons.First and foremost, it proved that DHT actually causes hair loss, and it proved that reducing the production of DHT in our body can stop hair loss.
Secondly, it proved that the results were also possible with products that were applied. In other words, it proved that topical treatment could replace systemic treatment.

Regrowth: Have you discussed with anyone else the results that you got?

Dr. Khadavi: Yes, I actually contacted a researcher from Merck Pharmaceuticals, a manufacturer of finasteride, and explained how I made the product and succeeded in getting a positive result.
In response, Merck's researchers told me that they had already tried to make new products to apply, but were not successful.
That was our last conversation.
I could prove that I was justified by seeing the FDA approve Propecia as a hair loss drug, and again last year Merck patenting a product for applying pinasteride as a treatment for male hormonal hair loss [something similar to what I tested nine years ago].

Regrowth: That's about the medical stuff, and why did you make the natural product, Levi-Bogen?

Dr. Khadavi: Fortunately, during my studies and especially through my involvement in various research projects, I was able to continue learning about making natural products specifically for hair loss with an open mind. I studied the ingredients of nature and they actually had a very powerful force in converting hair loss. The truth is, I was very surprised to learn that certain fatty acids [fatty acids] like GLA are much more effective than FDA-approved drugs like "propecia". And they could be used for application without any systemic side effects.

Regrowth: Could you please brief me on the rebiobogen and its efficacy?

Dr. Khadavi: Leviobogen is a product of nature.But it's based on the same scientific principles underlying Professionals, Rogaine.
We use natural ingredients scientifically proven to reduce DHT production, prevent binding to androgen receptors, and activate the growth cycle of hair follicles.
Revivogen is safe. It can be used for application, and can be used by both men and women.
The product you apply Leviobogen does not affect other parts of our body, but inhibits the production of DHT on its own within the scalp.Therefore, there are no systemic side effects that appear in medicines eaten like Propecia.
Revisozen is very original, and that's why we decided to file a patent application for it.

Regrowth: What ingredients do you have in your rebiobogen at the moment, and what do they do?

Dr. Khadavi: Gamma Linolenic Acid, Alpha Linolenic Acid, Linoleic Acid, and Oleic Acid: These are the most important parts of rebiogen.
These ingredients inhibit the 5 alpha reductase enzyme that converts the male hormone testosterone into DHT in the cells of the hair follicles, fatty acids inhibit the 5 alpha reductase enzyme up to 90% not only [Type 2] but also [Type 1].
This is much better than Propecia, which can only inhibit [Type 2], which only suppresses up to 70%, and is very similar to the new drug Dutastride or Avodart, which is a dual inhibitor.In addition, these fat acids have a very important anti-inflammatory function in the hair loss treatment process.

Azaleic Acid, Vitamin B6, and Zinc Sulfate: These are the other 5 alpha reductase inhibitors added as supplements.
These ingredients can block the enzymes in other ways, further inhibiting the production of DHT.

Saw Palmetto Extract, Ethyl Laureate, Phytol, and Beta Sitosterol: These ingredients are responsible for blocking androgen receptors.
This works like DHT closing the door to the follicle and eventually even the cell nucleus that blocks protein production.

Grape Seed Extract (Procyanidin Oligomers): This ingredient has the ability to activate the growth phase of hair follicles and has shown the effectiveness of minoxidil, the active ingredient of rogaine.

Regrowth: Is there any new research on the effectiveness of current ingredients?

Dr. A new study conducted by the Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Khadavi: Davis, showed that "Gamma Linolenic Acid," the main ingredient in ribogen, was the most potent of the five alpha-leadership enzyme inhibitors in the forms [Type 1] and [Type 2].
This incredible finding is double-proof.It confirmed the previous research report once again, which was carried out on human cells.

5 alpha-reductase-catalyzed conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone is increased in prostatic adenocarcinoma cells: suppression by 15-lipoxygenase metabolites of gamma-linolenic and eicosapentaenoic acids.

Although the androgens, testosterone (T) and its highly active metabolite dihydrotestosterone (DHT) play a role in the development and progression of prostate cancer, the mechanism(s) are unclear. Furthermore, 5 alpha-reductase which catalyze the conversion of T to DHT, has been a target of manipulation in the treatment of prostatic cancer, hence synthetic 5 alpha-reductase activity inhibitors have shown therapeutic promise. To demonstrate that nutrients derived from dietary sources can exert similar therapeutic promise, this study was designed using benign hyperplastic cells (BHC) and malignant tumorigenic cells (MTC) derived from Lobund-Wistar (L-W) rat model of prostatic adenocarcinoma to test the effects of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and their 15-lipoxygenase metabolites on cellular 5 alpha-reductase activity. Our data revealed: (i) that incubation of MTC with [3H]-T resulted in marked conversion to [3H]-DHT when compared to similar incubation with BHC; (ii) that DHT-enhanced activity of 5 alpha-reductase was inhibited 80% by 15S-hydroxyeicosatrienoic acid, the 15-lipoxygenase metabolite of GLA, when compared to 55% by 15S-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid, the 15-lipoxygenase metabolite of EPA; and (iii) that their precursor fatty acids, respectively, exerted moderate inhibition. Taken together, the study underscores the biological importance of 15-lipoxygenase metabolites of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in androgen metabolism.

Dr. Khadavi: To study the effectiveness of rebiobogen in current male and female hair loss, we have also begun an independent placebo-testing study of ribiobogen itself (the ingredients are already widely recognized by academia).The study is conducted by completely independent researchers of placebo-tested methods, and there should be no bias or prejudice in the results.This is an ongoing study, so I can't tell you more about it.

In addition, recently, we have supplied free rebiobogen for one year to consumers who want to report their usage results.The experiment, the first of its kind, was concluded.
Thirty-nine men and women aged 18 to 65 who experienced hair loss within five years participated in the experiment, who had not used Propeciana Rogain before the experiment. Of the 39 participants, 77 percent answered positively that they increased thick hair, including a decrease in hair loss, and only nine (23 percent) answered that they had no income.

Regrowth: Are you thinking of adding or transforming new ingredients to your rebiobogen?

Dr. Khadavi: Yes, we always try to keep rebiobogen at its best by newly discovered technologies or newly scientifically proven ingredients.Currently, we are studying several possible ingredients that have shown effects on hair loss.After more experiments and medical tests, these elements may be added to the production line to make rebiobogen more powerful.
