Propecia® (Finasteride 1 mg.)
One of the most appealing aspects of Bosley Medical's hair restoration procedures is that, for the great majority of men, virtually all of the transplanted hair will grow naturally for a lifetime, without the need for external or internal chemicals or other drugs. Long-term growth of the transplanted hair is ensured by your own normal blood supply, and by the hormone-resistant nature of the hair follicles carefully selected by the doctor to accomplish the restoration. These excess hair follicles from the very back and sides of the head are extremely resistant to the thinning and balding effects of male (androgen) hormones such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
For men who nevertheless want to try an internal medication to attempt to slow the progression of their hair loss pattern, Propecia® (finasteride 1 mg.) is the first pill ever approved for this purpose by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some Bosley Medical patients have found Propecia® a useful addition to hair transplantation in their strategy against hair loss. If you are interested in trying Propecia®, your Bosley physician at one of our RSOs will answer your questions and determine if you are an acceptable candidate. For patients who qualify, the medication is dispensed by a prescription from that doctor.
According to the manufacturer (Merck & Co.), among the men who showed any benefit from Propecia® pills, the main positive result from taking Propecia® was a slowing or cessation of their hair loss over the back and top of the scalp—but only for as long as they continued to take it. Note that only two out of one hundred men (2%) who took Propecia® every day for one year, and only five out of one hundred men (5%) who took it every day for two years, achieved what Merck called "excellent" regrowth. Also note that if you want to try it, you must commit yourself to taking it for at least six months—otherwise don't start!
However, any hair maintained or improved by Propecia® will be lost within about six months after the medication is discontinued. Merck also states that no positive effect has been established in "bitemporal recessions", which are the areas of hair loss receding on both sides of the front hairline. Unfortunately, these are the areas of greatest concern to most men, especially younger men under the age of 40. Further, men who already have "shiny bald" areas, will probably not benefit from Propecia®, because the hair follicles that have already died cannot be brought back to life. Men who have only early thinning in the back and top (crown and vertex) may have a better chance to see some benefit-but as noted above, only for as long as they continue taking the medication.
If you decide to try Propecia, it is important for you to clearly understand realistically what can and cannot be expected. Merck and Co. has provided Bosley Medical with high quality before, during and after photographs of numerous men who took Propecia® pills every day for two years, during Merck's clinical trials of the drug. If you like, you are invited to view these photographs at any Bosley Medical Office and judge the results for yourself.
