"Insider Information: Dutasteride is Probably Safe"

Tonight I had an exceptional experience that I know will be welcome news to those who, like me are considering taking or are taking Avodart for hairloss. My girlfriend is the executive assistant to a very senior executive in the pharmacutical industry. She and I had dinner with him and his wife tonite. Over dinner I explained to him how I was considering taking Dut for hairloss. I explained how some felt that perhaps Dut was unsafe in light of Glaxo's decision to not proceed with Phase III trials. I asked him if he thought it was safe to take it since the FDA approved it for prostrate problems. He explained that he was previously on the Glaxo committee that decided to not proceed with Phase III for Dut for hairloss and that the only reason was because they had concluded that it would not be profitable to do so. He said they concluded that based upon disappointing sales for Propecia that it would take nearly a decade to break even on Dutasteride as a hair loss drug. He said he saw no reason why I should be afraid to take Dut for hairloss. However, I must add that he was emphatic that Dut only works for less than 50% of users, and that it was very possible that I would not benefit from using it.
In summary, he let me know that 1) Dut Phase III trials were not completed solely because Glaxo didnt think there was a profit to be made in marketing the drug, and 2) although Dut may benefit some people, it is far from a magic bullet for hairloss.

Hope this helps alleviate some concerns out there.

뭐 예상 대로군요. 일단 프로페시아가 큰 성과를 거두지 못한 것이 가장 큰 이유인 것 같습니다.

두타스테라이드의 효과가 50%를 넘지 못 했다는 것입니다. 이것이 중증도 이상의 발모인지 유지인지는 모르겠습니다. 하지만 피나스테라이드 1mg이 30%정도의 중증도 발모인 것을 감안한다면 50% 이하의 중증도 발모를 보이지 않을까 정도로 추측될 뿐입니다.
(아보다트 <두타스테라이드 0.5mg> 가 기준이라면 두피의 DHT 감소량과 중증도 이상의 발모 비율이 비슷하게 맞아 들어가는 경향이 있는 듯 합니다. 만일 2.5mg이 기준이라면 매우 실망스러운 결과일 것입니다.)

그렇다면 결론은....

1. 두타스테라이드는 일단 안전할 것이다.

2. 하지만 프로페시아에 비해서 큰 차별성을 보여주지는 못 했다.

3. 프로페시아와 비교해 큰 차별성을 보여주지 못 한데다 프로페시아의 매출도 그다지 못했기 때문에 글락소로서는 두타스테라이드를 탈모치료제로 내놓을 필요성을 느끼지 못했다.

정도인 듯 합니다.
