Industry-academic cooperation with Dongguk University...Selection of targets for support from the Industrial Technology Foundation
LifeCode has begun developing a next-generation hair follicle treatment.

LifeCode International, a bio-specialized company, said on the 4th that the bio-chemical engineering department of Dongguk University, an industry-academic cooperative research institute of LifeCode, a complete subsidiary, has been selected as the best laboratory support project by the Korea Foundation for Industrial and Technology and has begun developing next-generation hair follicle treatments.

The development will run from September this year to March 2008, and a total of KRW 390 million will be invested.

Next-generation hair follicle therapy refers to cell therapy that can treat baldness using hair follicles, adult cells, and stem cells extracted from bone marrow or umbilical cord blood.

It is a more advanced conceptual treatment in autologous transplantation, which has been known as the most effective treatment for hair loss patients so far.

Autologous hair transplantation, which is currently the most common procedure, is a method of extracting and separating hair on the occipital side, which does not show hair loss, and planting it in the front.

The hair implanted in this way settles into a complete follicle and becomes a permanent hair that grows again.

However, the biggest drawback of this method is that the number of hair that can be implanted is limited. The maximum number of hairs that can be planted in one procedure is about 2,000, and it is usually impossible to operate more than three times.

In addition, it is expensive, and there is a problem that the patient suffers for a considerable period of time after collection and transplantation of hair follicles.

"The next generation of hair follicle cell therapy can treat hair loss by amplifying a large amount of stem cells extracted from hair follicles, adult cells, bone marrow, or umbilical cord blood in a non-living place," LifeCode said. "It is a next-generation cell therapy that uses only cells or mixes them with transplant support."

"If this happens, a significant number of hair follicle cells or stem cells can be proliferated in a small amount of hair, bone marrow, and cord blood, making it virtually possible to transplant indefinitely," he added.

Above all, when hair follicles or bone marrow cord blood is used, the collection of cell sources is relatively simple and the patient's pain is significantly reduced. In the case of bone marrow collection, cell culture is possible even if only a fairly small amount is collected compared to the amount required for bone marrow transplantation.

If this treatment is developed, only about 10 hair follicles can be collected from the occipital region, which is equivalent to three autologous hair transplants, said Choi Soo-hwan, president of LifeCode. "It can be treated continuously with stem cells separated and cultured from about 10m of bone marrow or cord blood stored as a child."

Therefore, it will become an emerging dark horse in the hair loss market, which is expected to cost about 1 trillion won in Korea by 2010, President Choi expected.

Meanwhile, LifeCode is up 1.08% (200 won) from yesterday to 18,700 won as of 2:21 p.m. as news of the development of next-generation hair follicle treatments was reported on the KOSDAQ market.
