Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor developed as a treatment for prostatic hypertrophy, and in Korea, it was approved as a treatment for hair loss by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in 2009 and is sold under the name of 'Abodot'.
Although the U.S. FDA has not officially approved it as a hair loss treatment, it has been approved as the world's first hair loss drug in Korea and is widely used.
Key Features and Effects of Dutasteride
Efficacy: Improvement of benign prostate hypertrophy (prostate hypertrophy) symptoms, decrease risk of acute urinary retention
Hair loss treatment: Clinical results suggest that inhibiting 5-alpha reductase is effective in preventing and suppressing male hair loss (especially M-shaped hair loss), but the U.S. FDA has not approved it as a treatment for hair loss.
Domestic approval: World's first approved treatment for hair loss by the Korea Food and Drug Administration in 2009
Side effects: Side effects such as decreased sexual function (feet failure, decreased sexual desire, etc.), headache, and depression are reported, so under the age of 18 and pregnant women are prohibited from using them in principle.
Finasteride is one of only two hair loss medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The other drug is a hair loss medicine that is applied with minoxidil. Although there are many drugs and nutritional supplements that are effective for hair loss on the market, the drugs that have been confirmed to be clinically effective and have fewer side effects are this finasteride, minoxidyl, and dutasteride.
It is well known as Propecia[1] which is the trademark of the original drug.
Although it has become famous as a hair loss drug, pinasteride is a drug originally made for the treatment of prostate hypertrophy and is also a very effective treatment in this regard. When treating prostatic hyperplasia (5 mg), it is taken at a much higher dose than when treating hair loss (1 mg). It is sold under the brand name Proscar in Korea.
