Although men who took the alopecia ameliorating drug "propecia" (pinasteride) had continuous sexual function-related side effects, a study showed that it was accompanied by a reduction in the amount of alcohol consumed and the number of drinks.
The correlation between taking "propecia" and reducing alcohol consumption and alcohol preference has been suggested through animal testing through rodents, but this is the first time such a correlation has been proven in actual clinical trials.
Pinasteride is a drug that is also being released as a treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia named 'Proscar'.
Michael S. Irwick, an assistant professor at George Washington University Medical School, made the announcement in a report published on the 13th in an online 版 of the 誌 "Alcohol Addiction: Clinical and Experimental Research" published by the American Association for the Study of Alcoholics (RSA).
The title of this report is 'The effect of reducing alcohol consumption with persistent sex-related side effects in men who took finasteride: a preliminary study'.
Professor Erwick explained, "It has been observed that taking pinasteride induces a decrease in the concentration of neurosteroids, a type of hormone in the brain that is important." However, he added that since this study is preliminary, follow-up studies are expected to be followed to more clearly identify the effect of 'propecia' on the human brain.
Nevertheless, Professor Erwick emphasized the significance of the study, saying that it means that it has taken one step up the stairs important to broaden the understanding of the side effects of taking "propecia."
His research team conducted a standard interview survey of 83 men who were healthy but continuously developed sexual side effects after taking 'propecia'. The survey subjects were filled with those who continued to have sexual-related side effects at least three months after stopping taking drugs.
During the investigation, the research team collected information on the medical history (病歷), sexual function, and drinking conditions before and after the subjects took "propecia".
As a result, it was analyzed that the amount of alcohol consumed decreased after stopping taking propecia in 41 of 63 men, or 65% of them, who enjoyed drinking at least once a week before taking propecia. The average number of drinks per week (週當) reached 5.2±0.7 times before taking Propecia, which showed a significant decrease of 2.0±0.3 times after taking Propecia.
In addition, most of these effects of reducing alcohol consumption began to appear before stopping taking "propecia".
On the other hand, it was found that 20 people (32%) did not have any change in the amount of alcohol consumed, and 2 people (3%) rather increased the amount of alcohol consumed.
Professor Erick concluded, "Following research should clarify the impact of taking 'propecia' on the central nervous system."
