[News Time] Side effect of wig called "Hair loss"
<Anchor's comment>
There are a lot of people who wear wigs, right?
These days, young people are increasingly worried about hair loss, and they often use it out of necessity or just for fashion.

But they often say that if you wear wigs wrong, your hair loses more.

Yes... I think that's relatively true. It is said that the situation often worsens, such as wearing a wig without properly grasping the condition of the scalp and worsening atopy.

Reporter Kim Jiyoung, I should be careful with the wig...

Yes, it is said that side effects can occur due to chemicals, dyes, and adhesives used to attach wigs.

The bigger problem is that when making such wigs, there are currently no standard safety standards or management standards that "should be made with certain ingredients."

I've covered the details.

<Report>

This is a wig store in Seoul. Recently, as the number of hair loss population has increased and even fashion wigs have become popular among young people, wig stores are popping up.

As a result, so-called luxury wigs are also appearing. Expensive wigs can cost millions of won.

<Interview>Wig store employee (recorded): "The wig written by Mr. 000 is 2.5 million won, and the wig written by Mr. 000 is usually 2 million won. It's more tough and lasts longer than normal human hair. We're making it at our factory, so we'll cut, dye, and follow-up care for you."

In particular, many hair loss patients are looking for adhesive wigs that are attached with bonds or tapes because they are not easily marked.

<Interview> Wigs Store Staff: "(Is there any side effects?) We don't know that. (Do you still do it a lot?) We do it a lot because we do it well."

<Interview> A wig store employee (recorded) "Once you put it on, it doesn't last long. (Bond) is expensive." "I'm saying there are no side effects."

But people who actually tried wigs were different. A 34-year-old Kim said he was having a hard time two months ago when he bought and wore a wig and had side effects.

<Interview> Kim00 (34, alopecia patient): "I bought it and used it because I heard it was comfortable, but it swelled red because I sweated a lot, and I think it smelled like dermatitis, and itches a lot."

25-year-old Jeong is wearing a wig and his hair loss is worse. Five months ago, Chung, who began to lose his hair after suffering from severe myocarditis, bought a wig and used it before rushing to the hospital in two months.

<Interview> Jeong 00 (25, alopecia patient) "My hair is weak and I have to support the weight of my (wigs), so it hurts and itches... So I get an inflammation, and if I give up my hair, I'll wear a wig, but I still have my hair left..."

<Interview> Kwon-jin (President of the Korean Society of Clinical Hair loss): "When this patient first came, the wig pulled the hair, so it became irritating, which caused inflammation and progressed to hair loss."

Jeong, who quit the company because his normal life was difficult, is now focusing only on treating hair loss at the hospital.

<Interview> Jeong 00 (25, alopecia patient) "I was afraid that the wig would be noticeable, that it might smell, that it was itchy and painful, so it was difficult to live a normal social life because my nerves were focused on my head. I lost confidence, so I just took a break from work."

The problem is the chemicals, dyeing materials, and adhesive components in the wig. If you use it without considering your skin's nature or scalp condition, side effects can occur.

<Interview> Kim Dong-hyun (Dermatologist at Cha Hospital): "People who had allergic reactions to chemicals or adhesives can usually develop symptoms within 48 hours of wearing a wig. Also, if you have inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis, you should use it more carefully when wearing a wig."

A 31-year-old Lee, who had circular hair loss, also suffered from severe atopic dermatitis while wearing a wig without much thought.

<Interview> Lee00 (31, alopecia patient): "Because the part you touch or the forehead is covered, the rash becomes red and atopy becomes severe. "It was itchy and it swelled red, so I got a lot of water."

The hair fell out according to the head, and the atopic dermatitis got worse, so there were a lot of inconveniences. Above all, it was very painful to meet people.

<Interview> Lee00 (31, alopecia patient) "It was very uncomfortable. "If you can't put on makeup and get red and wet, you can't put on makeup. In my case, I go to a client, so it's hard to deal with people."

More and more people are complaining of side effects after using wigs, but there are no safety regulations related to the production or sale of wigs.

<Interview> An official from the Korea Institute for Living Environment Testing said, "Legally determined items have standards for testing, but wigs have no standards. Unless it is legally stated what to do, there is no standard on whether a wig is suitable or not..."

If people with mild hair loss symptoms are included, the number of people with hair loss in Korea is 7 million. The demand for wigs is also increasing. Along with the special attention of users, it seems essential to establish regulatory standards for wigs.
