Comedian Lee Dong-woo confessed why he hid the rare disease for five years.
Lee Dong-woo appeared on KBS 2TV's 'Relaxed' recently recorded and revealed, "I am currently suffering from a disease called 'retinopathy'."
Retinal metaplastic degeneration refers to a disease in which the surrounding vision gradually narrows and eventually loses sight. It is a type of rare disease invented by one in 4,000 people.
Lee Dong-woo has been suffering from the disease for five years and is currently almost blind, and his guardian must always accompany him. At the recording site on this day, Lee Dong-woo said, "At first, I thought it was because I had a cat's disease. My wife was very worried, so I went to the hospital to get treatment, and that's when I found out," he said.
"I couldn't believe I had a rare disease," he said, adding, "An unexpected thing happened and it had been less than three months since I married my wife. And after that, my wife had a daughter now, and I'm very worried that it might be inherited," he said.
Lee Dong-woo said, "I've been to the hospital over Baekgun University. But everyone answered the same thing. He was angry and exploded, saying, 'Why is this only happening to me!' And I even suffered from severe depression," he said, making him feel sorry for the attention.
He also said, "I couldn't bring myself to let my mother know. So I hid this fact from my mother for two years, he said. "No matter how much I tried to hide it, I couldn't see, so I bumped into it here and there and bruised my thighs and legs. One day, when I kept spilling food on the floor because I couldn't find it while I was eating, my mother shouted, "Why do you keep spilling side dishes on the floor?" I was so angry with my mother and told her about the disease for the first time," he said.
In response, Lee Dong-woo's mother said, "I'll take out my eyes!" and sat down on the floor, hugging Lee Dong-woo and crying." Everyone in the studio shed tears.
In addition, as the condition of the disease gradually became more serious, the radio he was hosting also stopped under the excuse of 'I should get off because I am not feeling well'. In fact, I had a hard time because I couldn't see the plaintiff at that time," he said, revealing his unknown grievances.
Lee Dong-woo then said, "I've lived as a broadcaster all my life and I still like to broadcast. "I was afraid that if I confessed that I had a rare disease, I would be fired from the broadcast," he confessed. Watching Lee Dong-woo, who must have been struggling alone, the studio recording site was filled with tears.
Lee Dong-woo also said, "I'm okay now. I want to do something for people with dark vision like me," he said.
