Kyungpook National University Hair Team discovers protein that causes male hair loss for the first time in the world

A research team at Kyungpook National University Hospital's Hair Transplantation and Research Center discovered the world's first protein that causes male hair loss, paving the way for healing male hair loss.
The hair research team at Kyungpook National University Hospital (Professors Kim Jeong-cheol, Kim Moon-kyu, and Sung Young-kwan) said on the 24th, "We found the cause of male plastic hair loss and published the results in the February issue of the Journal of Investigating Dermatology," an international academic journal.

According to the research team, it was found that the DKK-1 protein produced by male hormones suppresses Wnt, a signaling protein that plays an important role in hair generation and growth, resulting in hair loss. In hair that is undergoing hair loss, male hormones induce the production of DKK-1, killing hair cells, but in whiskers, male hormones do not produce DKK-1, but rather promote the production of insulin-like growth factors (IGF-1), which are related to cell growth.

The research team also found that more DKK-1 is made by hair in the front compared to the back of the head, solving the mystery of whether hair loss occurs mainly from the front forehead to the top of the head and does not occur on the sides and back.

Male hair loss is known to occur due to male hormones when there is a genetic cause, hair loss does not occur before puberty, and hair loss begins after puberty with a rapid increase in male hormones. However, male hormones also have the effect of promoting hair growth, so the cause of male hormones' hair loss remained a mystery.

Professor Kim Jung-chul (pictured) said, "We have found a substance that inhibits the production of DKK-1, and we are verifying the hair growth effect on hair loss people by making them into prototypes such as shampoo and lotion." The study was conducted last year with 300 million won in research funding from the Daegu Metropolitan Government.
