Dr Richard Lee, MD answered: "There is no correlation between "excessive sexual activity or masturbation" and hair loss. Likewise, there is no correlation between the serum testosterone level and MPB. In the adult human male, there is a very wide 'normal range' for serum testosterone (300-1200 ng/dL), but there is no direct relationship between the testosterone level and MPB. However, there is a correlation between MPB and DHT (dihydrotestosterone). This is why many of the treatments for MPB include decreasing the amount of DHT that can affect the hair follicle. The rate- limiting factor in the production of DHT is primarily the amount of the enzyme 5 alpha reductase available to convert the testosterone to DHT. So, to answer your question, having more testosterone in the body does not necessarily mean there is also going to be more DHT."

Richard Lee, MD: There is no link between excessive sex or self-defense and hair loss. Similarly, male hormone levels contained in serum and male-type hair loss (MBP) are not related. Although the 'standard range' of male hormones in adult males is very large (300-1200 ng/dL), there is no direct association between male hormone levels and male hair loss. However, male hair loss and DHT (dihydrotestosterone) are related. This is why many treatments for male hair loss include drugs that reduce DHT levels, which can affect hair roots. The factor that determines DHT production is essentially the amount of 5-alpha reductase that can react. (Reverse note: It's not that the amount of male hormones is important, it's that the amount of 5-alpha reductase that can react is important. ) Therefore, high levels of male hormones do not necessarily mean high DHT.
