Researcher has solution for hair loss
Dr Lee, head of the first privately-funded, home-grown biotech firm here, has made a lotion that helps hair regrowth

A SINGAPORE researcher is set to take on the billion-dollar hair treatment market, with a lotion that he says will restore at least some of the crowning glory to shiny pates.

Dr Lee Chee Wee has developed a solution containing tiny peptides or chains of amino acids that prevent the receptors in hair follicles from coming into contact with hormones that cause them to fall out.

'Hair will definitely grow back, but don't expect the same lushness of youth, as some of the follicles would have been destroyed and these can't be saved,' he said.

The lotion has been tested on more than 100 balding men, said Dr Lee, who heads the first privately-funded home-grown biotech company here.

He is the founder of Lynk Biotechnologies, which has pioneered the techniques to sort out molecules of chemical substances that switch on - or off - the functions of proteins in the body's cells.

In the case of his hair product, called Biolyn Hair Serum, he told The Straits Times that he has managed to identify molecules of plant origin that - when treated with enzymes under proprietary conditions to form pools of unique small molecules - block the hormone DHT from entering and damaging the hair follicle.

'When this happens, even follicles empty of hair can start growing it again,' he said.

The men on the trial, who applied the lotion on their heads for about 45 minutes a day for an average of two months, had between 30 and 60 per cent of hair re-growth, he claimed.

One of them, marketing manager Jack Tan, 48, had been losing hair steadily for 10 years, until half his scalp could be seen through a few stray strands.

Over the years, he went through numerous lotions and potions, but these had little or no effect.

'Naturally, when I tried Biolyn I was extremely sceptical,' he said. 'But now about 30 per cent of my hair has grown back.

'I was almost in tears when it worked.'

As the ingredients are all natural, and are not consumed, the lotion is not subject to stringent regulations and testing required for drugs, explained Dr Lee, who is also associate professor at the National University of Singapore's medical faculty.

He is already distributing his product here through Global Nutraceutical Health. The project was carried out with financial assistance of $450,000 from Hong Leong Finance Singapore.

He plans to go regional in Malaysia, Thailand and Australia by the end of the year.

The worldwide hair-treatment industry is estimated to be worth about US$3 billion (S$5 billion) a year.

One in two men are balding by the time they are 50, and about one in five women suffer from thinning hair.

About 10,000 men in Singapore are believed to be on drugs which aim to treat baldness, while many others pay thousands of dollars for hair transplants, tonics, traditional medicine and even massage to encourage hair growth.

Dr Lee is now sourcing for a facility where he can manufacture the lotion on a large scale.

'We hope to get government assistance to get a plot to grow the plants needed for the active ingredients, as well as to do a clinical trial on the product, which could take one to two years,' he said.

'Although this is not necessary, I would like to establish conclusively that this is not a gimmick.'

Proven treatments

Drugs: Doctors here have said that about two in 10 patients have responded to the spray-on drug minoxidil, while three in 10 have had some success with the pill, finasteride.

Hair transplants: As long as the person still has a thick and healthy rim of hair at the back of his scalp, the chances of success are as high as 90 per cent.
