글락소 연구가 중단되었다는 소문에 대해...

제 홈페이지에 어떤 분이 글락소 웰컴의 연구가 중단되었다는 소식을
접했다고 물어와서 관련 소식을 올립니다.

요점부터 말하면, 1999년 10월 중순경 임상 실험 3단계로 접어들려고
하다가 중지되었으며, 그후 소식이 없다가, 2000년 2월경에 3단계
임상 실험을 재개하기로 결정했으며, 이 연구는 주로 전립선 비대증
치료에 대한 연구로 행해지고 있으나(프로스카와 마찬가지로)
남성형 탈모증 치료에 대해서도 글락소측이 충분히 인식하고 연구를
병행하고 있으며, 현재 글락소의 입장은 이 연구를 계속 몰두할 것이라는
점입니다.

10월 29일에 작성된 기사입니다.

Glaxo Wellcome has cancelled its hair loss trials for its new
medication, GI198745, also known as dutasteride. Saturday,
November 27 on the Bald Truth radio show, Dr. Marty Sawaya, a
participant in Glaxo's hair loss trials, said Glaxo had
ordered the trials stopped indefinitely. According to Dr.
Sawaya, the results from the Phase II (small scale human studies) for
hair loss were more encouraging than the early trials for Propecia
. The Phase III (large scale human trials) were originally set to
begin in October, were then pushed back to January of 2000, and
then discontinued a week ago. The doctor was not able to provide
a reason on the show. At this time it is unknown whether Glaxo
will still be pursuing the drug for prostate treatment.
If it is still approved for prostate treatment, hair loss
suffers will still be able to get it and use it. Regrowth
will be attempting to find more about this situation and will
release more information as it becomes available.

대한 연구가 중지되었으며 그 이유는 알려져 있지 않다고 되어 있습니다.
이에 대해 '무한정(indefinitly)' 중단할 것을 글락소측이 관련
의학자에게 지시했다고 되어 있습니다. 2단계 임상 실험에서 소규모로
인간에 대한 임상 실험이 행해졌으며, 그 결과는 프로페시아의 초기 임상
실험 결과보다 훨씬 고무적이었으나, 원래 1999년 9월 3단계 연구가 진행
될 예정이었으나 일정이 자꾸 밀린 끝에 중지되었다고 되어있습니다.

또 다른 기사에서 이 연구를 하고 있는 Shawaya라는 의사는 이 약이
프로페시아보다 효과적일 것으로 본다고 언급한 바가 있었습니다..

다음은.. 1999년 12월 23일자의 기사로서, 글락소 웰컴의 연구가
다시 진행되고 있음을 알리고 있습니다.

Glaxo-Wellcome has clarified its position in regards to its
decision to delay the trials for Dutasteride (GI198,745).
In recent emails to visitors who corresponded with Glaxo,
they have made their position clear with the following statement
sent to concerned hair loss sufferers:

"Glaxo Wellcome remains committed to both the product and the
disease area The company will to reschedule the start date
of the GI19874 AGA Phase III programme in February 2000.
GI198745 is also being developed for benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH). This program is progressing according to
plans and will not be impacted by the decision to reschedule
the androgenetic alopecia program."

Regrowth.com is now in touch with a spokesperson at Glaxo-Wellcome
regarding this who will be keeping Regrowth informed of future
decisions regarding Dutasteride, and we will be updating information
on the site regarding this as it becomes available.

According to Mary Ann Rhyne, a spokesperson for Glaxo-Wellcome,
"Glaxo-wellcome remains committed to the product in this disease
area. A decision... is to be taken in February 2000."

According to Ms. Rhyne in regards to our inquiry, GI198,745 has
not yet been submitted to the FDA for approval for Benign Prostatic
Hyperplasia (BPH), the first form in which it will become available.
Regrowth.com will also be following the BPH version as it moves
forward in the approval process and expects to keep viewers
informed of its status.

Ms. Rhyne was very helpful and positive in our conversation
regarding GI198,745, and it is this person's opinion that her
attitude reflects a commitment by Glaxo-Wellcome towards this
product and keeping hair loss sufferers informed of its status.

기사의 제목이 New Glxo Wellcome Drug Back on Track이라고 되어있었
습니다.. 기사 중의 따옴표 안의 부분이 글락소 웰컴의 공식 입장입니다.
그 주된 내용은 이 약의 "탈모증 치료에 대한 임상 실험 일정의 재조정
여부에 관계없이 전립선 비대증 치료제로서의 임상 실험 일정을
2000년 2월에 결정할 것이며, 글락소 웰컴은 이 질병(전립선 비대증을
말함)에 대한 연구에 계속 몰두할 것이다"라고 되어있습니다. 그리고
현재 임상 실험 3단계를 계획중이고 아직 FDA에 승인을 신청하지 않았다고
되어 있습니다. 그리고 "G874에 대한 임상 실험 3단계 일정은 2000년
2월로 결정되었으나 G745(우리가 관심있는 약의 명칭입니다)의 일정은
2000년 2월에 결정된다"고 되어 있습니다. G874가 어떤 약인지는
모르겠구요...

이 기사를 쓴 기자는 글락소측의 대변인인 Rhyne이란 여자와 접촉했으며,
이 대변인은 기자와의 대화에서 긍정적인 자세를 보였으며, 이러한
자세로 보아 글락소 웰컴측이 이 약에 대해 상당히 몰두하고 있음
(commitment)을 보여주었고, 글락소 웰컴측은 Regrowth.com에게
계속 관련 소식을 업데이트해주겠다는 약속을 했다고 되어 있습니다.

글락소 웰컴의 연구가 중단되었다는 소문은 10월 중순경의 이야기를
알고 계신 분들이 하는 것 같습니다. 다시 언급하지만 이 연구는
다시 진행중(back on track)이고 일정이 재조정되고 있다는 것입니다.

제 좁은 소견으로는 아마도 부작용과 관련하여 임상실험 일정이
재조정되는 것이 아닌가 보고요... 기사의 내용으로 보아서는
글락소측이 이 연구를 아주 중단하거나 포기한다는 어떤 내용도
밝힌 바 없고 다만 일정을 재조정하고 있다는 내용만 나와 있습니다.

약은 어느 것이나 부작용이 있기 마련이기 때문에 이 점에 대해서
계속 연구를 하는 것 같습니다. (예컨대 부작용을 줄이는 방법등...)
