오는 화요일저녁 제이레노가 진행하는 투나잇쇼에 미국 숏트랙 스케이터(영화배우라고 해야 하나??) 아폴로 안톤 오노가 출연할 예정입니다. 아직 500미터와 릴레이 경기가 남아 있어서 결과가 어떻게 될지는 모르겠지만, 프리뷰를 보고(안현수가 오노를 감싸안으며 넘어지는 장면을 계속 보여줍니다), 또 저번에 레노가 한국인을 비하하는 인종차별적인 농담을 한걸로 미루어 봐서, 또 무슨 헛소리를 해서 우리의 심기를 불편하게 만들지 기대가 되는군요.
미국에 사시는 분들 시간이 되시면 시청하시고 만약에 또다시 한국을 비하시키는 인종차별적인 발언이 방송을 통해 나간다면, 아래글(2433번)에 나와있는 예문처럼, 정중하게 레노나 엔비씨 앞으로 항의메일을 보내시길 바랍니다. 마음 같아서야 엔비씨 방송국을 문닫게 만들고 싶지만, 그게 뭐 맘대로 되는것도 아니고.^^ 아래 편지 참 좋은 방법인 것 같습니다. 미국애들 쌍소리로 욕하고 저주를 퍼붓고 그러는건 이 게시판에서 우리끼리 얘기할때나 하는게 좋을 것 같습니다.
미국애들이요, 지들끼리 싸울때도, 미친듯이 흥분해서 욕해대고 그러면 그 싸움에서 진걸로 간주를 합니다(아니면 미친놈 취급을 받습니다). 물론 하층 쓰레기들은 그런식으로 10초에 한번씩 에푸짜 들어가는 단어 써가면서 싸움을 하지요. 허나, 자기 자신의 감정을 끝까지 절제하고, 이성적으로, 정곡을 찌르는 논리정연한 말로 상대방을 압도했을때만이 비로소 상대방이 자기의 과실을 인정하고 고개를 숙입니다. 아니지, 미국애들은 자기의 과실은 인정을 잘 안합니다. 법정에서 불리할까봐. 폭메, 폭언, 헤킹 등도 좋지만, 논리정연한 어조로 무엇이 잘못되었는가를 그들에게 정확히 알려줄 필요도 있지 않을까요?

Yesterday at 6 p.m.on our show, I mentioned a joke about South Korean skater Kim Dongsung, told by Jay Leno, the host of NBC's popular "The Tonight Show." Many people in Korea have since heard the joke and have expressed their anger about it.
어제 6시 투데이즈 매거진에서 저는 미국 NBC 방송국에서 Jay Leno가 진행하는 Tonight Show에서 그가 김동성 선수에 관한 농담을 한 것에 대해 이야기 했습니다. 한국의 많은 사람들이 그 프로그램을 보았으며 또한 분노를 감추지 못 했을 것이라고 생각합니다.
[For those of you who don't know, the Tonight Show is a popular late-night comedy-oriented program that has been running for several decades. Many of the jokes told during the opening monologue (the five-minute segment at the beginning during which the host tells a series of jokes about current events) poke fun at well-known figures, including President Bush, ex-President Clinton, music stars such as Brittany Speares, actors such as Tom Cruise, etc.]

During his Thursday monologue (which was broadcast on AFKN Friday afternoon during Olympic coverage, and again on Friday night during the regular Tonight Show broadcast), he made several jokes about the race between Kim and Apolo Ohno of the US team, and Kim's later disqualification. A couple of the jokes were about Kim cutting off Ohno, but the final joke was about Kim eating his dog. Specifically, he said that after Kim was disqualified, he got so mad that "he went home and kicked the dog, then ate him."
목요일의 독백은 한국의 AFKN에 금요일 낮에 방송이 되었으며 금요일 밤에 다시 한번 같은 채널에서 재방송 되었습니다. 그는 오노와 김동성의 경기, 김동성의 실격에 대한 여러가지 농담을 했습니다. 예를 들면 김동성이 오노의 진로를 방해했다는 이야기, 또한 김동성이 개를 먹었을 것이라는 농담들을 했습니다. 자세히 말하자면 그는 "그 한국 선수 굉장히 화나 보이던데요. 너무 화나서 아마 집에 가서 개를 발로 차고 잡아 먹었을 겁니다" 라고 했습니다)
Clearly this joke is making fun of the stereotype that Koreans generally eat dogs a lot. [The part about 'kicking the dog' is related to a common American expression that when someone gets angry at work, he goes home and takes it out on his dog.] This type of joke is an ugly racist stereotype that is offensive to many Koreans and Korean-Americans, not to mention Asian-Americans in general.
명백히 이 농담은 한국인들은 모두 개를 먹는다는 고정관념을 다루고 있습니다. [집에 가서 개를 찬다 (go home and kick the dog)는 표현은 미국의 숙어로서 사람이 화가 났을 때 집에 가서 개에게 화풀이를 한다는 일종의 속담과 같은 표현입니다. 이에 제이 레노는 화가 나서 개를 찬 후 "먹을 것이다"라는 멘트까지 덧붙인 것입니다] 이러한 인종차별적이인 고정관념은 많은 한국 사람들과 재미교포, 더불어 아시아계 미국인들에게 모욕적인 것이라 할 수 있습니다
While it is right for us to be angry, we need to be careful about how we
express it. Many of the responses to the Kim disqualification have gotten out of hand, and that will end up embarrassing us as a country. Hate mail, threatening mail, and hacking into web servers are all inappropriate behavior.
우리가 화나는 것은 당연한 일이지만, 우리는 그렇기 때문에 더더욱 조심을 할 필요가 있습니다. 김동성 선수의 실격에 대한 지금까지 우리의 반응은 비이성적인 것이 많았기에 잘못하면 오히려 우리 나라를 우습게 보이게 할 지도 모릅니다. 공격성의 메일이나, 협박 메일, 해킹을 한다거나, 서버를 다운시키는 등의 행위는 올바는 대처 방안이 아닐 것입니다.
In a case like that of Jay Leno, the best thing to do is to write him
and let him know you found his remarks offensive. Jay Leno is, at heart, a kind and intelligent person. He may not know how his remarks may have hurt not only Kim, but the rest of South Korea. I urge you to let him know how you feel. I also urge you to let his network NBC know how you feel.
제이 레노의 발언과 같은 상황에서 우리가 생각할 수 있는 가장 좋은 대처 방안은 그에게 편지를 써서 그가 말한 것이 모욕적인 것이었다는 사실을 자각하게 하는 일입니다. 제이 레노는 본디 친절하고 지적인 사람으로서 아마 그가 이 말을 했을때 김동성 선수 뿐만이 아니라 한국 사람들에게 큰 모욕을 가져다 줄 것이라는 것을 알지 못 했을 것입니다. 부디 우리가 느끼는 것들을 그에게 알려주길 권합니다. 우리가 느끼는 것들을 NBC 방송국에 알려주길 바랍니다.
Below I am including a letter I am writing to Jay Leno and NBC. Feel free to use it as a sample letter and send your own. But most important, behave in an appropriate manner. Be polite. Be courteous. Name-calling, insults, cursing, bad language, etc., will make Korea look bad, not him. Do not say bad things about Apolo Ohno in your complaint to Jay Leno. Do not make insulting remarks about the US, Japan, or any other country.
제가 투나잇 쇼로 보내는 이메일을 아래 달았습니다. 샘플 편지로써 읽어보시고 각자의 편지를 쓰셨으면 합니다. 가장 중요한 것은 이성적으로 대처해야 한다는 것입니다. 정중한 메일이어야 그들이 중요하게 생각할 것입니다. 욕설이나, 모독, 저주의 말을 퍼붇는 다거나 하는 것은 제이 레노 보다는 오히려 한국의 이름을 실추 시킬 것입니다. 오노 선수에 대한 욕을 해면 안 될 터이고, 미국, 일본이나, 그 이외의 어떤 특정 국가에 대한 욕을 하여서는 안 될 것입니다.
Simply put: we must express our anger in a constructive way. If we make this campaign civil, that is the only way to make it effective.

Dear Mr. Leno,
Hello. My name is Jonathan Hilts-Park, and I am a public broadcasting news commentator for at EBS (Educational Broadcasting System) in Seoul, South Korea. I am writing to address a joke you made during your monologue that has offended many Koreans.
During the monologue of your Thursday, February 21 program, you made several jokes about Korean skater Kim Dongsung, who came in first in the 1500-meter race, but was disqualified for alleged cross-tracking. Your monologue was aired twice in South Korea through AFN Korea (American Forces Network Korea). A couple of the jokes you told were about you being cut off by a Korean driver, just as Kim was accused of cutting off US skater Apolo Ohno.
Your final joke, about Mr. Kim eating his dog, went completely over the line. Specifically, you said that after Mr. Kim was disqualified, he got so mad that "he went home and kicked the dog, then ate him." (In your monologue, you didn't mention Mr. Kim's name; if you did not even know the name of the person whom you were insulting in such a way, that makes the situation even worse.)
With this offensive joke playing on a very unfortunate racist stereotype, you have added considerable insult to injury for a hard-working world-class athlete whom millions of people feel was robbed of his gold. Not only that, but you have perpetuated that same stereotype in a way that would make it more socially acceptable to Americans in general. Your comments were on the air twice throughout South Korea, and many people here were deeply offended. They were shocked that such a thing would now be broadcast throughout a country like the United States.
Not only are your comments offensive to Mr. Kim, and the rest of South Korea, but they are hurtful to millions of Korean-Americans and other Asian-Americans, who are affected by such nasty stereotypes.
We know you can do better than that. Your joke was nothing but a cheap shot based on an unfair racial stereotype, as bad as comments about Blacks eating watermelons. I know from your on-air and off-air comments that you are a decent man who condemns racism -- particularly against Blacks. You're the descendant of Irish and Italian immigrants, two groups that have experienced a great deal of discrimination in the United States, so it seems surprising that you would spread this kind of thing around.
You're the number one late-night host in America and we think your standards should be a little higher. Your jokes, and the cultural connotations that go with them, are repeated throughout the country, becoming almost a model of what is appropriate and acceptable. We realize that these are meant to be jokes, but that doesn't justify perpetuating such nasty racial stereotypes.
Most Koreans would like an apology for those remarks, as well as some indication that you understand why they were so offensive and hurtful.
