Dense Packing Basics

In those patients with sufficient donor density, dense or ultra dense packing can be performed to restore hair density to levels previously regarded as unattainable using other hair restoration techniques.
The issue of hair transplant density is critical in determining the quality of the transplant results. Density is the single largest area of concern from patients of other hair restoration clinics.
What patients need to understand is what is normal hair density and what percentage of this density is required in order to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result. Hair density is measured in numbers of follicular units per square centimeter of scalp. This varies enormously within a population and even more between different racial groups. In Caucasians the average density is usually between 90 and 120 follicular units per square centimeter. The density is lower in other racial groups and is lowest in those of African descent.
A key component of dense and ultra dense packing is the Lateral Slit Technique: the creation of recipient sites customized to the exact size of the follicular unit of the individual hair replacement patient. The technique is made possible by the invention by Hasson & Wong of a custom blade cutting device. This device is now commercially available and used worldwide by various respected hair restoration surgery clinics.


Lateral Slit Technique이란

Hair restoration surgeons, Doctors Hasson & Wong, pioneered the lateral slit technique, recognized as the single most important surgical breakthrough in hair transplant surgery since the follicular unit. Lateral slit technique provides natural results, mimicking nature, and minimizing scarring. This revolutionary surgical method for recipient site creation is now used by leading hair loss clinics around the world.
The lateral slit technique is the only surgical method that is able to duplicate the alignment and distribution of hair as it occurs in nature, maximizing coverage, and eliminating the pluggy results of older hair transplantation methods.
The angle and direction of hair growth can be precisely controlled, allowing transplantation of areas previously regarded as too difficult or unsuitable for hair transplant surgery, i.e. the temple and sideburn zones.
In the donor area, follicular units appear to be lined up alongside one another in a plane perpendicular to the direction of hair growth. Lateral slit technique mimics nature's arrangement of hair follicles providing the patient with the most natural possible results.
In other methods of creating the recipient site, incisions are made sagitally, parallel to the direction of hair growth. In such methods, maximum possible density in a given area cannot be achieved, hairs grow randomly and often atop one another, producing redundant coverage and unnatural results.


Achieving Optimal Hair Density

Hair restoration surgeons have long been taught that those patients who achieve 50% of original density will look the same as those with full density. So it would appear that transplanting anything over 50 follicular units per square centimeter would be unnecessary. The reality is that in our experience 50% of original density does not in any way look the same as full density. Factors such as hair shaft diameter, hair color and curl will greatly affect the appearance of density in the final result.
Thus, in some hair transplant patients, natural and dense results can be achieved with as little as 30 follicular units per square centimeters, while other patients will need up to 75 follicular units per square centimeter to achieve natural density.
With dense packing, we are usually able to achieve this density in a single surgical session. Many hair transplant clinics have to perform multiple sessions attempting to achieve natural density and in the end produce less dense and less natural results. We have achieved consistently excellent yields with packing at as much as 80 follicular units per square centimeter.
Hasson & Wong Hair Transplant Clinic is no longer focused on what density we can achieve technically but how we dense pack based on the amount of donor hair available and the area of thinning or bald scalp that needs to be covered.

Megasession

After years of experience and hundreds of megasessions, Drs Hasson & Wong have performed megasessions of up to 6000 follicular unit grafts with excellent results.
Our experience has shown us that there is no fixed upper limit in terms of how many follicular unit grafts can be placed in a single surgery given the right conditions. The limiting factors are scalp laxity, donor density and size of the recipient area.

When You Arrive

When you arrive on the morning of your procedure you will be greeted by one of our staff members. You will be asked to fill out some basic forms while your doctor and surgical technicians prepare for the hair transplant surgery. A technician will take your blood pressure and make sure you have followed the pre-operative instructions carefully. Although rarely needed, you may be offered a mild sedative. You will then be led into one of four state-of-the-art procedure rooms. Hair transplant procedure rooms are designed specifically for hair transplantation, facilitating optimal efficiency and patient comfort.

Procedure Review

Before the hair restoration surgery begins, your doctor will review your previously discussed goals and expectations and work with you to determine the most effective use of your donor hair. The doctor/patient review is an integral part of the process: the doctor will listen to your wishes and ideas, take them into account, and make suggestions based on thousands of successful hair restorations. The procedure will not move forward until you feel completely satisfied with the approach and design you and your doctor have agreed upon.

Donor Area Removal

Hair transplant surgery begins with injections of local anaesthesia into the donor area. The anaesthesia will ensure that you feel no pain. Once the area is frozen, your doctor will begin removing the donor strip. Donor strip removal takes about 45 minutes. During this part of the procedure, you will be lying face-down on a comfortable table very much like a massage table.
Once the strip removal is completed, your hair transplant doctor will close the donor site with surgical grade stainless steel staples designed for cosmetic surgery. While your doctor is closing the donor site, technicians will begin separating follicular units from the donor area.

Graft Creation

With the aid of stereoscopic dissecting microscopes, highly skilled technicians dissect follicular units (1 - 4 hair groupings) from sections of the donor strip.

A Break and Refreshments

Once this initial phase of your hair restoration is completed you will be able walk around to stretch your legs or use the washroom. One of the technicians will bring refreshments for you while other staff members prepare the procedure room for the second phase of your hair restoration surgery.

Recipient Site Creation & Graft Insertion

For this part of the procedure, you will be seated in a comfortable, reclining procedure chair. You will be offered a viewing menu of over 150 DVD movie titles. As the hair transplant doctor creates recipient sites—small incisions that will receive the donor hair—you can watch a movie, read, or admire the spectacular view of Vancouver and North Vancouver mountains.
Recipient sites are created using the lateral-slit technique, pioneered by Drs Hasson & Wong. The Hasson & Wong Lateral-Slit Technique is the only surgical technique that mimics the alignment and distribution of hair as it occurs in nature.
After the initial recipient site incisions are made, two technicians will begin to place the first wave of grafts. All technicians that place grafts have undergone a vigorous training program to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Lunch will be provided.

The Transplant Continues

After lunch, hair transplant surgery will continue: technicians will place more grafts and the doctor will create more recipient sites. At most anytime during the day you can request a break to use the washroom or stand up and stretch.

Post-Op Package

Once the procedure is finished you will be presented with an after care post-operative package. This package consists of various medications such as an anti-biotic, mild pain killers and other assorted items to make your post-operative healing time go as smoothly as possible. You will be encouraged to write or call Hasson & Wong for any follow up questions you may have.
